My Mother-In-Law Wants To Be My Hall Pass

The story

Over family dinner, Kate jokes that she could give her husband Dan a hall pass and never worry, because he'd never take it. Everyone laughs except her mother, Margot. Minutes later Margot catches Dan alone in the kitchen with a single question: would he? He says no, and fast. She says nobody has ever refused her that quickly, and mentions that Kate has book club tomorrow evening. Episode 2 is that evening: Dan turns up asking whether she needs anything, and Margot has him fixing a buckle, counting his refusals out loud and describing what his wife won't allow. Then Kate calls, and everyone sounds perfectly normal.

Where the heat comes from

He's good at saying no. She's better at asking. The appeal is a decent man refusing out loud while everything else about him disagrees, with his wife one phone call away. The free part is flirting, a buckle and that call.

Who it suits

A pick for anyone who loves a confident, teasing mother-in-law and a good guy whose willpower is being tested live.
