My Best Friend's Mom Teaches Pilates

The story

Jake opens his gift: pilates sessions from the woman who sorted out Tyler's back. Tyler's mother, as it turns out. Jake arrives at the studio and finds her all business and all warmth, teaching him how to breathe, with no machines in the room because, she says, she's the only equipment he needs. He wonders aloud which part of the session is the actual pilates. All of it, she says. Then Tyler texts, asking if mom has fixed him yet, and Jake answers like a man holding something back. Tyler turns up early and finds the door locked. Tomorrow, she whispers, after closing.

Where the heat comes from

A best friend's mother, a locked door and a secret kept inches from the person who paid. The free minutes are breathing cues, close corrections and one man not saying his thoughts out loud. The pressure comes from the clock: Tyler can knock at any time.

Who it suits

For fans of the older, confident instructor who takes charge, and the kind of secret you can't tell a friend.
